It’s been exactly a week since general manager Brian Cashman changed the fate of the New York Yankees when he traded for Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo and Texas Rangers outfielder Joey Gallo.
The Yankees Gallo landing came as no surprise as the Yankees had been linked to him in rumors leading up to the trade deadline. But the Rizzo deal came out of nowhere. It also kept the blood rivals of the Yankees from making a significant upgrade for the stretch run.

ESPN MLB Insider Buster Olney joined “The Michael Kay Show” on Wednesday to explain the Yankees’ trade deadline.
“Michael, this is mind boggling to me. I don’t think there was a player who was a better fit, who was in the trade market for a competitor other than Anthony Rizzo was for the Red Sox. I just saw the Red Sox this weekend in St. Petersburg while they were playing against the Rays. They needed a left handed hitter. To verify. Anthony Rizzo would have ticked this box. They needed a first basic production. They’re dead last in the majors in first-base production. They needed someone who was going to be comfortable in a large market in a pennant race. He would obviously tick those boxes. But the most important thing, and the reason why I don’t understand why the Red Sox didn’t step in and make a deal for him, and from what I understand, they don’t were not close. The Yankees made the deal, and the Red Sox’s offer, whatever it was, was not close to what the Yankees had on the table.
“They don’t understand it, and whatever the decision Alex cora made as they fit in Kyle schwarber in their training he’s going to have to make what is at best an even worse average defense, if he plays Kyle Schwarber at first base. It’s a place he’s never played before. If he plays him in the outfield, he’s a much worse outfielder than the other alternatives. If put it at DH and JD Martinez goes to the outfield, JD Martinez decreases the defense.
“I don’t understand why the Red Sox haven’t stepped up. And it’s really amazing when you look at what happened at the deadline. The Blue Jays have spent big on (José) Berrios and others. The Yankees have stepped up, even though they are fighting effectively for the second wildcard as they hit those deals. They Rays Stepped Up. They have Nelson Cruz. The team that has made less progress than the others was the team that was in first place at that time, and they are falling like a rock. I wonder, because you’ve been to the clubs, I’ve been to the clubs, the emotional reaction of the players in this room knowing that the front office hasn’t stepped in and hasn’t worked to make them better . Now that they have Schwarber coming, the Red Sox feel like they’re in the middle of the month. Other people think Schwarber will be later in the month. And they have Chris Sale coming back, then maybe they find their balance that way. But Michael, I don’t understand. I didn’t understand it at the time it happened and everything that has happened since, I think, underlines how perfect Rizzo would have been for the Red Sox.
