Wednesday 2 December is a very important date on the MLB offseason calendar. This is the non-submission deadline, or the day when teams must offer their players eligible for arbitration and arbitration a contract for 2021. They do not have to sign their players before the deadline. 8 p.m. ET, but they have to make an offer. Players who do not receive a contract offer become free agents.
A new group of players will join the (slow) autonomous agent market on Wednesday. The number of non-tenders has increased in recent years and is expected to climb again as teams clean up their payroll amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Here is the total number of non-bidders over the last five offseason:
- 2015: 36
- 2016: 35
- 2017: 25
- 2018: 41
- 2019: 53
Here is our overview without tendering. Last year’s non-bidders included Blake Treinen and Taijuan Walker, among others, and several big names are on the chopping block this year. To be clear, players who aren’t on offer can re-sign with their squad, although they’re usually looking for a better opportunity (and more money) elsewhere. Non-tenders are usually a clean break for both sides.
