Former New York Yankees pitcher Stephen Tarpley is unemployed again.

MLB Trade Rumors reports that the New York Mets nominated Tarpley for an assignment on Saturday to make room on the 40-man roster for Jerad Eickhoff, who participated in Sunday’s 6-5 loss to the Pirates of Pittsburgh.

The Mets claimed Tarpley on waivers from the Miami Marlins in January. He appeared in a game for the Mets, giving up a pair of runs without recording an out.

Tarpley’s 28-year-old MLB career began in 2013 when he was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles, who traded him to the Pirates two years later.

In 2016, the Yankees acquired southpaw Tarpley as a player who would later be named in the trade that sent Ivan Nova to Pittsburgh.

Tarpley made his MLB debut in 2018, posting a 3.00 ERA in 10 games for the Yankees. But the Yankees deteriorated on Tarpley in 2019 when he threw to a 6.93 ERA in 21 outings. Ahead of the 2020 season, New York traded Tarpley to the Marlins for minor league third baseman James Nelson.

Tarpley struggled in the coronavirus-shortened 2020 season, with a 9.00 ERA in 12 relief appearances.
