One of the Giants’ biggest rivals in the NL West is reportedly poised to add an ace.

The San Diego Padres are set to acquire pitcher Max Scherzer from the Washington Nationals, The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reported Thursday, citing sources.

The Giants, along with the Los Angeles Dodgers, were among the favorites to clinch Scherzer, but it looks like he’ll head to San Diego instead.

As of this writing, the Giants led the Dodgers by 2 games in the NL West and the Padres by 5.5 games.

Scherzer, 37, has won the Cy Young Award three times and remains one of baseball’s top pitchers. In 19 starts for the Nationals this season, he’s 8-4 with a 2.76 ERA and 0.89 WHIP.
