The glass is half full AND half empty for the Boston Red Sox.

The good news? Ace Chris Sale is set to return to rotation after missing the entire 2020 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery. Through athletics:

On Saturday, Sale completed his fifth start in rehab, pitching 4 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and three walks while striking out eight strikes for Triple-A Worcester. He threw 89 shots, 59 for catches. In his five starts from rehab, Sale posted a 1.35 ERA with 35 strikeouts and five walks in 20 innings in the Florida Complex League and twice each for Double-A Portland and Triple-A. Worcester.

The sale is scheduled to begin Saturday against the Baltimore Orioles. As for slugger Kyle Schwarber, the news is not so good.

Sources have confirmed that Schwarber suffered a minor backhand with tightness in his left groin midway through his rehabilitation from strain in his right hamstrings. Schwarber accelerated his progress in running and fielding this week while the team was in Detroit, but he felt tension in his left groin, so the Red Sox lowered his activity level as a precaution.

The Red Sox traded with the Washington Nationals for Schwarber before the July 30 deadline.

Boston has just completed a horrific 2-8 road trip that saw them give up first place to the Tampa Bay Rays. The Red Sox have four games behind the Rays in the East AHL and just 2.5 games ahead of the third-placed New York Yankees.
