MLB rumors: Yankees have ‘eyes’ for All-Star slugger who piques NL contender’s interest

Like sand through the hourglass, these are the (trading) days of Brian Cashman’s life.

The New York Yankees general manager has less than three weeks to improve his running roster.

The first on the list could be a left-handed outfielder, especially with Aaron Hicks missing after having wrist surgery.

The New York Post’s Joel Sherman thinks Texas Rangers hitter Joey Gallo may be the answer for New York.

Athlete Gallo is among the best position players mentioned regularly as available in this commercial market as the last place Rangers try to rebuild themselves. Gallo can be a free agent after next season. Padres general manager AJ Preller was with Texas when Gallo was drafted, and opposing officials expect San Diego to be interested. The Yankees have also always had eyes for Gallo.

Gallo, winner of the Gold Glove Award last season, represented the Rangers in Tuesday’s All-Star Game. This was his second nod to the Midsummer Classic, with the first coming in 2019.

This year he’s tied for fifth in majors with 24 homers, setting him in pace for his third season of 40 homers (2017 and 2018 were the others). He also leads the MLB with 72 walks.

Gallo took part in the Home Run Derby on Monday evening. Gallo, the No.2 seed, lost in the first round to Colorado Rockies shortstop Trevor Story, 20-19.
