MLB Rumors: Yankees See ‘Number of Teams’ Interested in Signing Former World Series MVP

New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman could look to bolster his starting rotation ahead of the July 30 trade deadline. But there is one move he can make now that won’t cost him anything: signing southpaw Cole Hamels. The southpaw hosted a showcase Friday in Texas for nearly two dozen teams, including the Yankees, New York Mets and Boston Red Sox.

FanSided’s Robert Murray reports “a number of teams are already expressing interest, according to major league sources. Hamels, 37, is hoping to sign a competitor soon, although it will take him around a month to ramp up before he can return to a major league mound. A National League executive in attendance came out impressed, noting that his fastball hit 90 mph as his side throws had a good bite and inconsistent control.

Last month, Jon Heyman of the MLB Network Hamels reported “continues to throw a mound and build itself every day… Potentially, a big mid-season pickup.”

There is no doubt that Hamel has passed its peak. He pitched just one game last season for the Atlanta Braves before being eliminated with a shoulder injury.

But if Hamels is fully healed, he could be a nice play for the end of the rotation. Remember, Hamels is a proven winner. The four-time All-Star was the National League Championship Series and World Series MVP for the Philadelphia Phillies in 2008.

The Phillies traded Hamels to the Texas Rangers in 2015, who traded him to the Chicago Cubs in 2018.
