The Yankees continue to dominate their opponents at AL East
After the Yankees strangled the Blue Jays through a five home defeat attack (including two from Brett Gardner), they pushed their lead in the East AL to 9 1/2 wins against the Rays. That's enough to tell you that the Yanks dominate their division, but in reality it goes even further. Here is this, as of Saturday's victory:
Yes, 52-18 against intra-division opponents, giving a winning percentage of .743. Here's how this record breaks down:
- 12-5 vs rays
- 14-5 against the Red Sox
- 9-6 against the Blue Jays
- 17-2 vs Orioles
The Yankees still have five games against the Blue Jays and two against the Rays. They will certainly break this link with the 2018 Red Sox. More specifically, the magic number of the Yankees to win the division for the first time since 2012 is now reduced to four.
DeGrom, Ryu pitch gems
The Dodgers and Mets met Saturday night at Citi Field for a battle of NL leaders Cy Young – Hyun-Jin Ryu and Jacob deGrom. The duo did not disappoint, because their combined line for the night is clear:
14 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 14 N / A
Each ace worked seven innings and deGrom had eight of the 14 strikeouts. As the following sports-action images show, he still had some of the best stuff, even towards the end of his release:
DeGrom has been on a roll for some time, but Ryu, who once felt like he ran away with Cy Young, struggled badly in his previous four starts. This type of effort on Ryu's part was of course welcome in the light of these recent difficulties. The Dodgers ignored his last turn in the rotation to give him a little more rest and maybe a little work on his changes. Obviously, he responded very well.
As you can see above, the Mets triumphed as they were able to join Joe Kelly and Julio Urias after Ryu was lifted. Each for the Mets is a big one, as they try to stay in the wild card race of the NL. As for the Dodgers, they have already won the NL West title. With this double jewel, deGrom lowers its ERA to 2.61, while Ryu is now at 2.35.
The twins use a set of pens to beat the Indians
Friday night, the Indians and Twins will play a double match at Progressive Field on Saturday. Cleveland kicked off the day with three and a half days behind the Twins in Central AL and one game behind the Rays for second place with a Wild Card.
Friday's game was called in the third inning, scorching the starters of Jake Odorizzi and Aaron Civale, and forcing the Twins to use spring-loaded games at both ends of the twin ticket. The Bullens crew in Minnesota responded by forcing the Indians to win five singles in the shutout Saturday afternoon. Five bullpen combined for nine strikeouts.
The Indians, Mike Clevinger, were excellent, allowing two points and 10 goals in eight innings in the first doubles match. Jorge Polanco scored two goals in the third inning to give the Twins all the necessary points. The win broke Cleveland's four-game winning streak.
With the win, the Twins assured that they would leave this series in first place. A four-part sweep would have brought the Indians to the top spot of a half-match. Now, the best they can do is to leave 1 1/2 parts back. Minnesota has a chance to really put Cleveland away this weekend, and the pen got them off to a good start on Saturday afternoon. Speaking of putting Cleveland out of the way, the Twins also dominated in the second game, the double.
Hackers allow more than 10 races … again
I guess the Pirates and their fans can not wait for this season to be over. Beyond the discord of the clubPittsburgh arrived Saturday after winning only 21 of its last 59 games, and its pitching staff has an average of 5.38 test points in those 59 games. The Pirates allowed 17 points in Friday's defeat against the Cubs. They were scored for 14 more points on Saturday. Kris Bryant scored a two-run homer.
Saturday's match is the 28th time this season that the Pirates allow double-digit races in a game. This is not only the most in baseball, it's the most among all teams for almost two decades. The ranking since 2000:

It looks like the Pirates are going to clean up their home during the off-season, with Clint Hurdle and pitching coach Ray Searage the most likely to go. After a season like this, it's hard to say that replacing the coaching staff would be unjustified.
Snitker evicted after Culberson was hit in the face during a decay attempt
Charlie Culberson, the Braves forward, was stabbed in the Braves-Nationals game Saturday, when he was hit in the face by Fernando Rodney's throw in a defense attempt. Here are the immediate consequences:
Culberson was on the ground for several minutes, his pain was obvious and he seemed to bleed. Finally, he was able to get up and be helped in a waiting trolley. The National Park crowd gave him a warm ovation on leaving the field:
Although Culberson's health is obviously the story here, it is also interesting to note that one referee ruled that Culberson had offered on the field and therefore had a right to strike instead of the first goal. Atlanta manager Brian Snitker stood out (NSFW language possible):
Snitker was probably already sorry to see his player suffering such a serious injury, and his frustration with the attack is understandable in any context. The good news for Snitker and the Braves is that they scored four points in the frame, when Washington manager Davey Martinez made the mistake of leaving in a clearly shaken Rodney.
As noted above, the Braves have won a playoff victory.
The highlight of the day: the facial hair of Fiers
Mike Proud of Athletics clashed with the Rangers on Saturday night and, take a look at the recent decision of his life:

- RHP twin Sam Dyson will remain closed, suffering from biceps pain, reports The Athletic. He has been dealing with the bicep problem since he came to the Giants at the trade deadline. Dyson launched on September 3rd.
- The Blue Jays' LHP, Tim Mayza, has a torn elbow ligament and needs to be operated on by Tommy John. reports Sportsnet. Mayza left Friday's game in obvious pain after throwing a throw. It will probably miss the entire 2020 season.
