Kepler scores three times; The twins avoid sweeping
Entering the final of Thursday's series, the Twins were likely to be swept by Cleveland – a result far from ideal, given the huge advance of the division in Central Minnesota. That did not happen – not under Max Kepler's gaze.
Kepler, coming into play with 12 home runs and 114 OPS + over the season, made three assists against Trevor Bauer. Viewing:
Later, Kepler added a fourth hit – a single – and also a ride, moving his seasonal line from 0.252 / 0.324 / 0.490 to 0.226 / 0.36 / 0.342 / 0.542. How's that for a jump?
It should be noted that Kepler's record at the beginning of his career is 20 races, spread over 156 games last season. He is already 15 years old in 54 games. It is probably fair to say that he is going to have a new career high before the end of the year – especially, it seems, he continues to face Bauer.
The Rockies' Lambert shine in their debut at MLB in Wrigley
Rockies' best prospect, Peter Lambert, debuted at MLB on Thursday. In seven innings, Lambert finished with nine strikeouts over battles against the Cubs, Rockies record for career debut. Lambert took the place of Kyle Freeland, who finished fourth in Cy Young's election vote at NL last season. Freeland was sent to Triple-A last week after struggling in his first 12 starts.
Lambert not only played well on Thursday, but he even had a shot with a single in his first major league game in round three against Cubs starter Jose Quintana. Here is the last line of Lambert:
Lambert, 22, was Colorado's second round pick in 2015. When he pitched for the Triple-A Albuquerque, Lambert recorded a 2-2 record and a 5.07 record in 3 departures. In his last three minor league games, Lambert had 20 strikeouts in one goal.
Thanks to Lambert's strong debut, the Rockies (32-29) were able to avoid being swept by the Cubs (34-27).
Archer starts a quality start against the Braves while the Pirates win the series
It has not been a year since the Pirates acquired Chris Archer of the Rays, but we all know how bad this trade has been for Pittsburgh. Need more evidence? Consider that Archer made a good start on Thursday in a draw victory over the Braves – and that was a reason for celebration.
Archer allowed six hits, two walks and one run through six innings while firing six batters. Believe it or not, this outing marked his second high season start – and his first since April 13th. In six starts, he had 33 hits and 28 points in 29 innings. Ouch.
The Pirates' victory helped them win the series against the Braves – their first victory since mid-May.
Stat of the day: Arnaud raises the rays
The Rays beat the modest Tigers in a 6 to 1 final on Thursday afternoon, thanks to an unlikely contributor: Arnaud's Travis reserve catcher.
Arnaud's is on Thursday 10 to 67 for the season with two more successes. Naturally, he went against, picking up two hits – both homers at home – and leading on four points. He also walked.
Whatever the case may be, here is your statistic of the day: before the two-on-two match Thursday, Arnaud had not left the field since March 31, 2018. Maybe that's what it's all about. They say is true about their arrival in small groups.
The highlight of the day: Moustakas has another match against two
On Thursday, for the second time in a month, Brewers second baseman Mike Moustakas played in a multi-player game.
