The direction of the nationals remains uncertain
One of the big intrigues of this event is whether or not the Nationals make their ace Max Scherzer available. Scherzer, an impending free agent who secured a no-trade clause under his 10-5 rights, would immediately become the market’s top starter. Sadly, the Nationals themselves don’t seem to know which direction they’ll take by then.
“We still have a few games to play before making those kinds of decisions, but I think a double-lane is probably the most advantageous for us right now,” Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo told reporters on Tuesday, according to MASN’s Mark Zuckerman.
The Nationals entered Wednesday 45-49, which brought them down to five games in the National Eastern League. Washington will complete a series against the Miami Marlins on Wednesday before starting a seven-game road trip against the Baltimore Orioles and Philadelphia Phillies.

Rays interested in Cruz
The Rays are among the teams that are interested in Twins designated hitter Nelson Cruz, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.
Tampa Bay has been linked with Cruz in the past, and he would be a welcome addition for a roster that ranks 13th in FanGraphs’ wRC + measure. Cruz, 41, entered Wednesday hitting .295 / .373 / .538 (153 OPS +) with 19 home runs in 84 games; he would be ranked first in spokes in OPS + and tied for second in home runs.
If there is a catch with regard to the Rays’ interest in Cruz, it would be that they should then play against Austin Meadows in the outfield. The Rays, by preference or necessity, tend to favor defense over offense.
