The Yankees agreed to negotiate with a pair of top players on Friday. They started the day getting along with their own free agent, an infielder DJ LeMahieu, on a six-year contract worth $ 90 million. In the evening, they came out of the organization to add a right-hander Corey Kluber. Unsurprisingly, it was a much shorter deal, with Kluber heading to the Bronx for a single year at $ 11 million.
LeMahieu’s contract came a little above pre-offseason expectations. As winter dawned, the MLBTR predicted a four-year figure of $ 68 million for the reigning AL MVP finalist. LeMahieu eclipsed that mark by more than $ 20 million, albeit over two more years. The six-year term is undoubtedly a luxury tax avoidance solution. (Teams luxury tax figures are calculated by taking the average annual value of a contract, so extending the deal an additional year reduces the Yankees’ luxury tax per season.)
Kluber, on the other hand, landed in line with MLBTR’s prediction (one year, $ 12 million). The two-time winner Cy Young is a bit of a wildcard having pitched just 36.2 combined innings in the past two seasons. But it had generally impressed teams at a showcase earlier this week and has an atypical level of rise for an addition at this price.
