MLS will let fans pick an XI for the All-Star Game

Major League Soccer will allow fans to choose an XI, this time for players for seven specific positions, for the 2021 All-Star Game on August 25 as the league announced the player selection process on Wednesday.

The game, which will see the MLS All-Stars take on their LIGA MX counterparts, is scheduled to take place at Banc of California Stadium, home of LAFC.

Of the 26 MLS players to be chosen, 12 will be determined by a vote of MLS players, fans and the media, with each group representing one-third of the votes. Twelve more will be selected by MLS All-Star and LAFC Manager Bob Bradley, while the final two will be selected by MLS Commissioner Don Garber.

Unlike previous ASGs, players can be selected in seven specific positions: right-back, center-back, left-back, defensive midfielder, attacking midfielder and attacker / winger. As part of the voting process, MLS looked at performance metrics for the current 2021 season to rank players in positions where they are used the most.

Players, supporters and journalists will vote for 11 players: a goalkeeper, a right-back, two center-backs, a left-back, a defensive midfielder, two attacking midfielders, three attackers / wingers.

The best player in each position of the combined vote will be named All-Star.

The 12th player honored will be the one who obtains the second highest number of votes in total. Each MLS player will receive a special link to vote for the peers they feel most deserve All-Star recognition this season.

About 300 members of the media who regularly cover MLS will also make their picks for the league’s top players.

Liga Mx also revealed their selection process for their 26-man squad. The core of the team will be made up of the 14 players nominated for the Balon de Oro Awards 2020-2021 in different positions: goalkeeper, defender, full-back, defensive midfielder, attacking midfielder and striker, including the two best rookies. .

The team’s coach will take home the Balon de Oro’s Best Head Coach award and select 11 additional players to complete the roster and take on the MLS stars.

To complete the squad, the 26th player will be determined through a selection process led by Liga Mx Executive Chairman Mikel Arriola.
