Eli Miller, chief of staff of the Treasury Department and former Trump campaign manager, will be leaving the agency next week, according to an email sent to all staff by The Hill.
Mnuchin qualified Miller as an instrumental leader "who has always been by my side, and it will be very difficult to replace" in a statement.
Assistant Treasury Secretary Tony Sayegh also plans to leave the Treasury Department by the end of May. He talks with candidates for his replacement, according to Politico.
Fox News commentator Monica Crowley is expected to replace Sayegh. Prior to Trump's inauguration, she was appointed to the National Security Council, but withdrew her candidacy after reports of plagiarism were revealed.
The Treasury Department declined to comment on Sayegh's announced departure to The Hill.
Miller was widely perceived within the agency as a trusted assistant to Mnuchin, accompanying the secretary to important meetings and liaising with lobbyists and business groups. However, staff members felt that he preferred his relationship with Mnuchin over management of building or administration policy, according to Politico.
Sayegh played a leading role in advertising the tax reduction legislation signed by the GOP in 2017.
The announcement of these departures comes at a time when the administration seems to be heading for a judicial battle against the Democrats of the House for their six-year application for president's tax returns.
