Model Y reliability issues put Tesla low on Consumer Reports

The Model Y, the latest model from the automaker which began production earlier this year, is expected to become Tesla’s best-selling vehicle. It got good marks across the Consumer Reports staff during test drives earlier this year. But the reliability rankings are based on a survey of actual owners – who have reported significant issues.

“A car can be fun to drive and have all the features you want,” said Jake Fisher, senior director of automotive testing at Consumer Reports, “but all of that won’t matter much if you have to keep coming back to the dealership for the repairs. ”

Problems with the Model Y ranged from misaligned body panels to inadequate paint. One owner reported dust, debris and even human hair stuck in the paint.

Fisher said new vehicles often had reliability issues, but Tesla’s issues were unusually severe.

“These are basic things that they don’t achieve, which is disappointing,” he said. “It’s disappointing that the body panels aren’t aligned and they can’t even close the rear hatch. It’s disappointing that the paint has so many problems.

The Tesla Model S luxury sedan has also dropped to “below average” reliability and is no longer recommended by Consumer Reports. Model X retained its old ‘not recommended’ rating due to ongoing reliability issues.

Only Tesla’s Model 3 sedan, currently the company’s best-selling model, received a Recommended Rating from Consumer Reports.

Problems with the Model Y lowered Tesla’s overall ranking by two places, to second among the 26 car brands ranked. Now it’s just ahead of Ford’s luxury brand Lincoln, and just behind Volkswagen, which finished last in 2019.

“If Model Y had similar reliability to Model 3, Tesla would be in the middle of the pack, it wouldn’t be among the worst,” Fisher said.

Tesla also received poor reliability ratings from JD Power.
Consumer Reports staff have praised Teslas often in their reviews, regardless of reliability issues. Model S achieved the highest rating ever for a staff reviewed vehicle.

The disconnect between the rigorous review of Tesla vehicles by staff and the poor reliability scores of its owner survey has been an ongoing challenge for the company.

“It’s not our judgment, it’s [the] judgment of Tesla owners, “said Fisher.” If reliability improves, I would be very happy to recommend Teslas. They are satisfying and really fun to drive. They are good for the environment. We hope our feedback will help them improve these issues. “

Tesla customers remain incredibly loyal to the brand, despite the issues raised in the survey. “The same people who tell us they love their Tesla tell us about the problems with their cars,” Fisher said.

Tesla wasn’t the only automaker with reliability issues. Lincoln was injured by issues with its new Aviator and Corsair SUVs.

And the new version of the Ford Explorer SUV also suffered from serious reliability issues that made it one of the lowest scoring models of any domestic or overseas manufacturer this year.

Explorer’s owners have reported numerous transmission replacements, as well as issues with the SUV’s drive system, electronics in the car, electrical and engine equipment, and body hardware issues.

The least reliable vehicles in the ranking were the Chevrolet Silverado pickup and its GMC version, the Sierra. The Toyota Prius was the most reliable.

Toyota lost its ranking as the most reliable brand as Mazda took first place for the first time.
