We finally have the gameplay of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare – and it seems that the game is more realistic than the previous entries of the series.

The smooth restart of the famous FPS franchise by Infinity Ward had its 2v2 mode, called Gunfight, released by YouTubers last night on Twitch – and offered us our first glimpse of the gameplay.

In this mode, two teams of two face each other on specially designed maps, using predefined loads that change every two turns. We see a load including a shotgun and a gun change for a sniper rifle load, for example. Each player has 100 health and you do not heal.

Gunfight is undoubtedly a very competitive Call of Duty experience compared to the expert-driven modes we saw when launching Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. But, far from the rules of engagement, it would seem Infinity Ward created FPS all around.

Modern Warfare retains the reactive controls of the series and its deadly shots, but it seems that players are more melted than ever, move more slowly and shoot with more powerful weapons. This seems to me to be a more tactical game than previous Call of Duty titles, with new animations and visual effects for the franchise. You can tilt the guns slightly when you are in cover, the guns will smoke once you have fired your weapon, you can press twice to go up and the UI looks much sharper.

The reaction has certainly been interesting. I've seen the gameplay compared to Rainbow Six: Siege and Battlefield. I'm sure the traditional multiplayer modes will feel faster by default, but it's clear that Infinity Ward wanted to go back to the basics, while adding animation and audio work that allow Call of Duty to to align more closely with its competitors.

Joe Cecot, co-head of graphic design for Infinity Ward, also confirms that Modern Warfare will offer two options to tilt the blur in motion: one for the gun and one for the world, which is nice.

The complete unveiling of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare's multiplayer mode is scheduled for 6:00 pm (English time) on August 1, 2019.
