Moderna’s CEO said the company’s new COVID-19 vaccine could prevent infection for years.
Speaking at a virtual Oddo BHF event, a financial services group, Moderna CEO Stéphane Bancel said the “nightmare scenario” that the vaccine will not work is now out of reach . “We think there will be potential protection for a few years,” Bancel said.
He explained that “the disintegration of antibodies generated by the vaccine in humans decreases very slowly,” Reuters reports.
However, there are still questions about older patients because, as with all viruses, their immune systems decline over time, Bancel said.
The CEO also said Moderna is on the verge of proving his vaccine is effective against others coronavirus variants, Reuters reports.
The United States has shipments received Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech injections, both of which require two doses several weeks apart. The second dose must come from the same company as the first. Both vaccines have been shown to be safe and highly protective in large, yet unfinished studies.
In November, Moderna announced that its COVID-19 vaccine efficacy was 94.1% and its severe COVID-19 vaccine efficacy was 100%.
Pfizer announced that its vaccine is 95% effective against COVID-19 28 days after the first dose. He did not say how long the vaccine would last but added that his vaccine trial would continue for two more years.
The CDC says that since reinfection is possible with COVID-19, even people who have had the virus before should receive the vaccine. According to the CDC, it is still not known how long the natural immunity or immunity that a person gains from having an infection will last. Natural immunity varies from person to person, and some evidence suggests that it may not last very long for COVID-19.
