Contract drug maker Catalent Inc. is expanding its US production of Moderna Inc.’s Covid-19 vaccine, a development that could ensure the US has sufficient supplies as it ramps up vaccinations.

Catalent has reached a deal with Moderna that will increase the speed of vaccine production at the contract manufacturer’s Bloomington, Indonesia plant this month to around 400 vials per minute, according to people familiar with the matter.

Catalent will move shot manufacturing to one faster production line instead of slower two. The new doses will be ready to ship from next month, people said, and the modernized plant will be able to fill an additional 80 million vials per year.

The expansion will help Moderna meet its goal of delivering an additional 100 million doses to the United States by the end of May and an additional 100 million doses by the end of July.

Production in the United States of several licensed vaccines has accelerated in recent weeks, as manufacturers have increased production lines and taken other steps to increase production.
