While Indian cinema, be it Bollywood, Kollywood, Tollywood or whatever, has always held its head high in the thriller genre, few have ever managed to match the dexterity found in films by the master of suspense, Alfred Hitchcock. Teesri Mazil (1966), Ittefaq (1969), Kaun (1999), Dhund (1973), Andhadhun (2018) of Hindi cinema; Ratsasan (2018), Visaranai (2015), Thupparivaalan (2017) for Tamil cinema; Awe (2018 for Telugu films; and Baishe Srabon (2011) for Bengali films are the ones that immediately come to mind. When it comes to Mollywood or Malayalam cinema, Drishyam (2013) is still the big- father of all. So when you come back for the second round the pressure is definitely there to get the better of the money again. Is director Jeethu Joseph holding up, especially after his recent setbacks (Mr. and Ms. Rowdy, The Body, Thambi)? Seems like Mohanlal gets the best out of Jeethu, because not only does he roar to get back in shape with Drishyam 2, but also makes you wonder why he made us wait so long for the sequel all by peddling forgettable tariffs in the meantime.

What is it about
Six years have passed since the events of Drishyam, and Georgekutty (Mohanlal) and his family believe they have finally put all the inconvenience behind them like a bad dream. However, even the best plans still have a minor flaw, and this time it comes in the form of a deus ex machina that no one would have imagined in their wild dreams. That, coupled with a few unexpected red herrings, goes back in time, both literally and figuratively, again bringing the family to a crossroads. However, the cops have more to come if they think Georgekutty is going to fall so easily.

What is hot
Much like the first film, Drishyam 2 also takes time to set up, and like its predecessor, the build-up is well worth the wait. At half past two, not once do you feel the duration, like after an hour in the movie, once the ball really starts spinning, all you want to do is buckle up for the ride and not. never go down. By keeping the essence of Drishyam intact, Jeethu Joseph’s screenplay doesn’t once lose sight of the main characters’ ‘family first’ philosophy, even while playing hide and seek with our senses – the carpet is pulled from under our feet at several key times, and each time you appreciate it even more.
If his writing is on point, Jeethu’s direction has a head start, bringing back all the tributaries from the first film and merging them with the Georgekutty family river. Of course, it pays to have actors of the caliber of Mohanlal, Meena, Asha Sarath, Siddique and Murali Gopy doing all of the heavy lifting, with talented youngsters like Ansiba Hassan and Esther Anil providing them competent support. Technically, too, the film is brilliant, with Satheesh Kurup’s camera work and lighting changing the tone to suit the film’s different moods, VS Vinayak’s editing keeps things going despite the run-time and Anil Johnson’s background score raises the tension. whenever needed.
What is not
While Drishyam of 2013 also demanded a bit of a suspension of disbelief when it came to the red herrings (truth be told, all the fun is in there, or so be prudish and just watch Shakespeare), a few ( and just very few) of the red herrings here border the highly unlikely, especially a couple during the climax. That being said, this is where a director’s expertise comes in, and as mentioned before, Jeethu Joseph never loses his storytelling once through the film.
BL verdict
Some of the sharper turns aren’t quite as Hitchcockian as the first Drishyam was all the way to the end, but with 99% of its twists and turns sure to conjure up repeated “ WOWS ”, Drishyam 2 is as wonderful a sequel as any Mohanlal fan could possibly have. wished his sublime 2013 classic. He and director Jeethu Joseph play “fool me once, fool me twice” with the cops, and you wish they’d cheat on us over and over again. I go with 4 out of 5 stars.
