Charges were laid against a Californian mother who allegedly killed her granddaughter, threw her son from an apartment on the second floor, and then jumped off the balcony, prosecutors said.

Tierra Ortega – who was injured in the face when she jumped in the face – was charged Thursday with child abuse causing death and attempted murder, according to the San Bernardino County Attorney's Office.

Neighbors said they saw Ortega, 24, drop off his one – year – old son Jericho on the ramp at the Upland building.

The screaming child sank to the floor and had a broken foot, officials said.

When the authorities arrived, the mother would have jumped on the railing after her son, KTLA television reported.

The rescuers provided help to the mother and the child and then conducted an investigation into his apartment, where they found out that his 6-month-old daughter was no longer responding.

The girl, Ezlynn, was transported with head trauma to the Loma Linda University Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. His older brother remained at the medical center on Thursday in a stable state, authorities said.

Ortega was treated for facial injuries at a local hospital before being placed in jail.

The upland police initiated a fundraiser to raise money for the funeral of the little girl.
