Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey” continues to make headlines 52 years after its first theatrical release. The sci-fi epic is back in the news after crew members from the Utah Department of Public Safety and the Utah Wildlife Division discovered a silver monolith in the Utah desert. The solid object was about 10 to 12 feet tall. The exact location of the monolith has not been given to prevent people from traveling to the desert.

Helicopter pilot Bret Hutchings told Salt Lake City television station KSL-TV that the monolith appeared to be planted by an anonymous person, with the wildlife crew assuming the slab was built by an artist or fan of Kubrick’s science fiction monument. Hutchings joked, “We were joking that if one of us suddenly goes missing, I guess the rest of us are making a run for it… It’s about the strangest thing I’ve got.” met there during all my flying years.

The monolith was first discovered on Wednesday, November 18 as Hutchings and his crew flew over the desert counting bighorn sheep. The wildlife crew noticed the monolith coming out of a rock and landed the helicopter to investigate.

“One of the biologists is the one who spotted it and we just flew straight over it,” Hutchings told KSL-TV. “He was like, ‘Whoa, whoa, whoa, turn around, turn around! And I said to myself “What”. And he said, ‘There’s that thing over there – we’ve got to go look at it!’ We thought, is that something NASA is stuck up there or something? Do they bounce the satellites? “

The monolith appears in “2001: A Space Odyssey” at pivotal moments in history to provide a higher consciousness to anyone who meets their path. When the monkeys discover the monolith in the first chapter of “2001”, it implies that the mysterious slab is teaching the animal species to use bones as weapons. Later in the film, humanity’s discovery of the monolith leads to breakthroughs in artificial intelligence.
