Quick, darling! We must go beyond … the moon!

Some men just want to watch the world burn. Or tear to pieces. Or explode several million times. One of these men is director Roland emmerich, whose career consists mainly of both big disaster films (Independence day, 2012, The Day After) and small (Midway, White House down, the horrible 1998 US Godzilla movie). But his biggest disaster of all time, literally and figuratively, is coming soon, and it’s called Falling moon.

In which the moon, as you can imagine, falls. On earth. Please watch this trailer in all its WTF glory:

ThemOf course, this messes up the Earth in many unique and potentially conflicting ways! Corn Falling moon is not only about themoon fall on your heads. Note the elaborate space station seen in the trailer, then read the official summary of the film:

“In Falling moon, a mysterious force strikes the moon from its orbit around Earth and sends it on a collision course with life as we know it. Just weeks before impact and the world on the brink of annihilation, NASA leader and former astronaut Jo Fowler (Academy Award winner Halle Berry) is convinced she has the key to saving us all. ..bbut only one astronaut from his past, Brian Harper (Patrick Wilson, Half-way) and conspiracy theorist KC Houseman (John Bradley, Game Of Thrones) to believe her. These unlikely heroes will mount an impossible ultimate mission into space, leaving behind everyone they love, only to discover that our moon is not what we think he is.

This film is clearly a Armageddon scam with raised (and blown up) stakes, but between the summary and some of the weirdest shots in the trailer – like Patrick Wilson watching a ghost boy from space or a younger version of himself? – it looks like Emmerich might try to put a Arrival / Interstellar turn on the film, which should prove to be extremely awkward.

If I sound too negative about the film … you can hear me clearly. Roland Emmerich is a less talented Michael Bay. Apart from his beloved Independence day, his films are stinky. However, Falling moon it looks so ridiculous it can hit the same Independence day sweet spot, where silliness and cacophony manage to be entertaining instead of boring.

Anyway, I’ll call it here and now: Despite the wiggle room that science fiction usually has, I predict Falling moon will be the most scientifically inaccurate film ever made. I feel extremely confident about this, mainly due to the size of Emmerich believes the mwhere we are:

Falling moon, which also stars Michael Peña, Charlie Plummer, Kelly Yu, Eme Ikwuakor, Carolina Bartczak and Donald Sutherland, premieres on February 4, 2022. I can’t wait.
