Some 50 million Americans are expected to travel for the next Thanksgiving holiday – a steep drop that could be the biggest drop in a year since the Great Recession in 2008, according to a new forecast.
The data, released by the American Automobile Association this week, suggests fewer Americans will hit the roads, rails and skies as the coronavirus explodes across the country to levels not seen since the pandemic began in the spring. .
AAA says the projection is about a 10% drop from 2019, when 55 million Americans traveled for Turkey Day.
The vast majority of Americans who travel will drive, which represents 95% of vacationers, the data shows. But the total number of Thanksgiving pilgrims on the freeways will decline by about 4.3% from last year, to a total of about 47.8 million, the data shows.
“The trend of wait-and-see travel continues to impact final travel decisions, especially for the Thanksgiving holiday,” Paula Twidale, senior vice president of AAA Travel, said in a statement.
“The decision to travel is a personal decision. For those who are planning to take a trip, the majority will go by car, which offers the possibility of changing vacation travel plans until the day of departure, ”she added.
The number of Americans traveling by air, train and bus will likely decline significantly, according to the survey.
Only 2.4 million Americans are expected to take to the skies during the Thanksgiving travel period, which is down about half from 2019, the largest year-long drop on record .
Travelers taking buses, trains and cruises are also expected to drop by more than 75%, the data shows.
