Some drivers in Louisiana will see their car insurance rates drop from this summer.

Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon announced Thursday that he had approved a 2.2% reduction in the police rate for passenger cars with progressive insurance coverage.

The insurance department says Progressive is the second largest auto insurer in Louisiana.

Donelon said more than 175,000 of the company's insureds would benefit from the lower rate when they renew their policy, starting in September.

According to the Insurance Department, Donelon has also approved three rate cuts for passenger car coverage over the past year through State Farm, Louisiana's largest auto insurer with 1 million policies.

The inability of the Legislative Assembly of Louisiana to deal with the high cost of automobile insurance will certainly be a major problem in this fall's election.
