In Massachusetts, more than 24,000 convictions for drug-related offenses were overturned after a former state laboratory chemist realized he had altered cases by working almost daily.
Sonja Farak allegedly used drugs that she allegedly stole or fabricated in Amherst 's laboratory, resulting in the conviction of thousands of people on the basis of unreliable evidence.
In October, the court ordered the dismissal of all evidence-based convictions provided by the laboratory between January 1, 2009 and January 18, 2013, when the lab closed.
"This is a historic victory for thousands of people gravely affected by our criminal justice system, first by the wrongful acts of Sonja Farak, then by the wrongdoing of the government lawyers who have hidden the scandal," Matthew Segal, Legal Director of the Massachusetts ACLU. said in a statement.
