A petition asking HBO to remake the eighth and final season of "Game of Thrones" with new writers has exceeded a quarter of a million signatures.

The online petition was launched last Thursday, but gained ground on Wednesday from 15,000 signatures to more than 250,000 in less than 24 hours.

It reached 275,765 signatures at 5 am ET.

Unlike previous seasons, the final series of "Game of Thrones" was not based on George R. R. Martin's novels, it was written by showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

Season eight has been the subject of increasingly negative criticism as the episodes unfold. Many viewers have criticized the creators of the series for being rushed to an end and moving away from the established arcs of characters.

In a review of the latest episode "The Bells", the British newspaper The Telegraph claimed that the series "was irreparably ruined".

"The story has collapsed, the characters have become cartoons of themselves, and some of the worst, unrecognizable – and the world has lost the cohesion and the capacity for belief that it maintained earlier, "wrote a signatory of the petition Thursday.

Another added, "I do not want either of these two or Star Wars, either, it was lamentable."

Benioff and Weiss will shoot a movie in the Star Wars franchise after the end of "Game of Thrones".

An HBO spokesperson was not immediately available to comment when contacted by CNBC.
