A red flag warning is in effect today for much of southern California due to strong Santa Ana winds, moderately low humidity, and very dry plants and grasses.

The wind knocked over a big rig on Highway 210, shot down a billboard in Santa Clarita, kicked a tree on residences in Santa Paula, and threatened to exacerbate the bushfires that broke out in the region.

One of those fires, the Towsley Fire, broke out in Santa Clarita, and has so far burned up to 50 acres, although no structures have been threatened, according to a tweet from LA County Fire.

Cal Fire and the LA County Fire Department are deploying additional resources to be able to respond to any new fire.

LA County Fire has placed three additional strike teams in the county – one in the Malibu and Agoura area, another in eastern Los Angeles and another in the Santa Clarita area, spokesman Henry Narvaez said. .

“And they’re strategically placed there so that they can jump at any time during an initial attack if something should arise,” he said.

Each strike team consists of five fire trucks and 20 firefighters.

People should be extremely careful and think beyond things like cigarettes and campfires that could start a wildfire, said Ryan Kittell, forecaster for the National Weather Service:

“Less obvious things like dragging trailer hitch chains, even brush cutting or weed killers that can hit rocks and sparks in a dry place, all of these things have started fires before.

Meanwhile, Southern California Edison has cut power to about 55,000 customers due to the high fire risk, primarily in Los Angeles, Riverside and Ventura counties.

255,000 other customers have been warned that they could lose electricity; nearly half of them are in Ventura County.

Some of the strongest gusts recorded today in the Santa Clarita Valley were:

  • Saugus: 71 MPH (9:57 AM)
  • Lac Castaic: 69 MPH (8:50 AM)
  • Magic Mountain: 62 mph (10:10)
  • Browns Canyon: 74 mph (8:30 am)
  • Warm Springs RAWS: 87 mph (8:53 a.m.)
  • Magic Mountain Truck Trail: 86 mph (9:50 am)
