The drugs were found Sunday in Safeway stores in Woodinville, Bellingham and Federal Way.
Workers at the Woodinville store were putting bananas on sale when they saw something strange, Sgt said. Ryan Abbott with the King County Sheriff's Office.
"One of the boxes contained brown paper, which caught their eye, then they searched further and found these bricks," Abbott said. "They called the police and we went there and it turned out we had 22 kilos of cocaine with a market value of $ 550,000."
That's almost 50 pounds of cocaine.
The cocaine was surrounded by ordinary banana boxes, which were stuck for shipment, Abbott said.
"We are still trying to determine where everything comes from, we are investigating it, we know that everything has been shipped from a central warehouse, but we do not know where it came from." So it's a work in progress, "he said. I said.
"I know Safeway was great and they looked at every box in their warehouse and their stores just to make sure there were no other problems," he said. Abbott.
He said that he had never heard of this kind of event – especially not in three stores the same day.
"We see cocaine here, but we do not see such quantities and we do not see it in Safeway and we do not see it in banana boxes," he said.
This is not the first time bananas have been used to smuggle cocaine.
In April, the German authorities found hundreds of kilograms of cocaine, worth about 25 million euros ($ 28 million), which had been shipped to Aldi stores.
