Political divisions

Americans are politically divided on many aspects of the pandemic, from their personal reactions to their political preferences – a dynamic that several poll respondents, on both sides of the aisle, cited when asked to name the most big problems of the country.

Even on matters of policy, Democrats tend to be more universally in favor of specific restrictions than Republicans universally oppose – one-third of Republicans, for example, support school mask requirements, while that only 7% of Democrats are against it.

But there are also signs of an underlying division between former President Donald Trump’s most loyal supporters – the GOP majority – and the rest of the party. The new CNN poll was conducted by SSRS from August 3 to September 7 among a random national sample of 2,119 adults initially contacted by mail.
