Last week Dana White promised “a surprise” to anyone attempting to hack UFC pay-per-views in 2021 and just yesterday, a week before UFC 257, the UFC president doubled down on that. declaration.

Speaking to The Mac Life ahead of the UFC’s return this weekend, White addressed his comments, saying the UFC had overcome an obstacle to catch and chase the pirates and he was eager to catch them this year.

“We’ve been one of the leagues that have been so proactive on hacking,” White said. “I love how cool and tough these guys are acting on social media because let me tell you what, we caught a lot of people. Let me tell you what they do, they cry. They cry and they beg not to be pursued and all these other things.

“We’ve just overcome a huge hurdle in the hacking world and we’re going to catch some of these guys in 2021. Can’t wait to cry and beg. We’ll see how tough they are when they get caught.

Digital piracy is an ongoing problem in the United States, with estimates suggesting that online piracy costs the entertainment industry between $ 30 billion and $ 70 billion per year. The UFC is obviously only a small part of that industry, but going back to 2011, the UFC itself estimated that hacking costs them around $ 30 million a year. Still, the zeal with which White has spoken of catching pirates certainly makes it sound like something he takes personally, a claim White denies.

It’s still likely that the UFC will face an increase in piracy this year, as they recently increased the price of their PPVs to $ 69.99. Regardless of threats of lawsuits, it’s inevitable that people will continue to hack UFC PPVs and that’s something White knows too. Still, he can’t wait to make a dent this year.

“They will never all go away,” White concluded. “They’re going to be there and we’re not trying to get rid of them all. I just want to catch a few. That’s all I’m looking for. I just want to catch a few. You can’t stop everything, this hacking industry is going to go on forever. Let me grab a few and watch what happens – and I will, oh it happens.
