It takes a lot to surprise Georges St-Pierre, but at UFC 257, that’s exactly what Dustin Poirier did.
St-Pierre is one of the greatest MMA fighters of all time and known for his analytical approach to combat. Last year, St-Pierre took that expertise and moved on to an analyst role for the Quebec RDS (Sports Network) broadcasting team. But as good as St-Pierre is, he admits he didn’t see Poirier beat Conor McGregor last weekend.
“I thought Conor was going to win, and I was wrong,” St-Pierre told Michael Bisping on Bisping’s Believe me Podcast. “I was very surprised to see how Poirier (kept) his cool under the pressure. I think one of Conor’s greatest strengths is that he overwhelms his opponents with his pressure, his presence, all the information he gives to his opponent’s brain. Everything he does, the kicks, the lyrics, all that. He overwhelms his opponents and many of them fall back under pressure. But Poirier stayed alive and it was a real testament to his quality. It was amazing. Now it will be really interesting to see how Conor can come back from this.
Poirier’s victory was the biggest of his career and, arguably, McGregor’s biggest loss. This is the first time McGregor has been properly knocked out and left “Notorious” without a clear path to follow. A trilogy fight with Poirier is a possibility, as is a third fight with his original rival, Nate Diaz; However, both fights present the dangerous possibility of suffering yet another loss and many fans are starting to wonder if the end is near for the sport’s biggest star. Not St-Pierre, however.
“I believe Conor can come back from this loss,” said St-Pierre. “He’s the kind of fighter, I think, he thrives on confidence. When he’s confident, that’s how he behaves at his best. He likes to act confident (pantomime the Billionaire Strut), fake it until you get to it, he plays a role he’s very confident in. Maybe deep down he’s very scared, but I think he feeds on that, that trust, being loved or hated by the fans, the attention. Now it will be interesting to see how he comes back. I believe in Conor. I believe he will come back. I think he is able to overcome this obstacle.
McGregor’s return is already a hot topic of conversation in the MMA community. After the fight, fans immediately began to note that McGregor was now 3-3 years old since leaving the featherweight division, with a TKO loss in boxing added for good measure. Some suggest McGregor should return to 145 pounds, others that McGregor needs a change of sides, and still others that there is nothing McGregor can do. That the game simply passed him. For St-Pierre, everything is simple: McGregor needs to change his mind the same way St-Pierre did after his loss to Matt Serra.
“He needs to (be reborn),” said St-Pierre. “He has to change things in his training and in his life which he believes are the causes of his failure. It doesn’t matter if it’s true or not as long as he believes it. So in my case, like when I lost to Matt Serra, I forced myself to believe that I lost to Matt Serra because I underestimated him. Maybe I wasn’t scared enough, maybe I didn’t put in as much as I should in training, that’s what I tried to force myself to believe. It may not be true. But the important (part) is that he believes in it so that he can build his confidence in it, because he believes in it. It does not matter.
“He has to find what he thinks he did wrong in his previous pre-fight preparation, whether it was his training, his life or whatever, and not make the same mistake twice. It doesn’t matter if most people believe it’s bullshit, as long as he believes it himself. His confidence will grow from there and he will be able to come back a better Conor McGregor, at least as good as he was.
St-Pierre has often attributed his loss to Matt Serra as making him a better fighter and it certainly seems to have been. After this fight, St-Pierre never lost a fight again. For his part, McGregor has already at least publicly suggested that a lack of recent activity played a role in his performance and hopes to compete more often in 2021. And if St-Pierre is right, then maybe it is. everything McGregor needs to come back. up.
