FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) – The Fresno County Public Health Department warns Fresno County residents that mosquitoes close to the state of Fresno have been tested positive for West Nile Virus.

Health officials said mosquitoes were collected from postal code 93710.

"This confirmation is a strong reminder that everyone must take this disease seriously and must take every precaution to protect themselves and their family from mosquito bites," said Leticia Berber, Health Educator, Department of Health. Fresno County Public Health.

Health officials recommend contacting the mosquito control district in your area regarding stagnant water or mosquito problems, as well as reporting any neglected pools.

The county recommends that people practice the "Three Ds" to protect themselves from West Nile virus.

1. DEET – Apply an insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, lemon eucalyptus oil or IR3535 according to the instructions on the label. Repellents prevent mosquitoes from biting you. Insect repellents should not be used in children under two months of age.

2. DUST AND DUST – Mosquitoes usually bite early in the morning and in the evening. It is therefore important to wear appropriate clothing and insect repellent if you are outdoors during these times. Make sure your doors and windows have mosquito nets snug to prevent mosquitoes. Repair or replace torn or cracked screens.

3. DRAIN – Mosquitoes lay their eggs on stagnant water. Eliminate all sources of stagnant water on your property by emptying flowerpots, old car tires, buckets and other containers. If you know of a poorly maintained pool, please contact your local mosquito and vector control agency.
