The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a new guideline which found that asymptomatic people spread the coronavirus more than anyone.
What’s going on?
The CDC recently said people without symptoms were responsible for much of the spread of the new coronavirus. They cannot tell that they are carriers of the virus, so they are spreading it without knowing it.
The CDC said that is why masks are so important in curbing the spread.
- “Most SARS-CoV-2 infections are spread by people without symptoms.”
- “The CDC and others estimate that more than 50% of all infections are transmitted by people who do not have symptoms,”
- “This means that at least half of new infections come from people who probably don’t know they are infectious to others.”
In numbers:
The CDC has released specific figures that identify who is spreading the virus:
- 24% of people who transmit never develop symptoms.
- 35% of people who transmit were presymptomatic.
- 41% of people infected other whole people with symptoms.
The peak of infectivity occurred five days later, according to the CDC.
- “With these assumptions, 59% of infections would be transmitted in the absence of symptoms, but could vary (from) 51% to 70% if the fraction of asymptomatic infections was 24% to 30% and the peak of infectivity varied from 4 to 6 days. “
How it spreads
- The CDC said in its advice that the coronavirus is spread when people are exposed to infected people who “breathe, talk, cough, sneeze or sing.”
The good news about asymptomatic patients
Researchers have suggested that asymptomatic patients may be carriers of memory-appropriate T cells – which have already fought off other coronaviruses – which could help end the pandemic. Scientists could use these T-calls to help create the right vaccine and therapeutics to keep people safe, as I wrote for the Deseret News.
