Mother of black teenager killed by Florida lawmaker shot dead during son’s funeral

On November 13, MPs Jafet Santiago-Miranda and Carson Hendren were investigating a vehicle they believed could have been stolen and which had previously leaked an attempted traffic stop, Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey said in a post. Facebook a few days after the incident.

Dashcam footage released by authorities showed MPs chasing Pierce and fellow teenager Angelo (AJ) Crooms, 16, driving a car. After the teenagers’ vehicle pulled into a driveway, officers lowered the guns. Santiago-Miranda started shouting: “Stop the vehicle!” – and eventually fired several shots into the vehicle as it continued to move, killing the teenagers.

Ivey claimed Santiago-Miranda, who had been put on paid administrative leave with the other officer as the investigation continued, was in “danger” and “was forced to fire his service weapon in an attempt to stop the car threat from crashing into him.

Goodyear told NBC News that the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office will not provide any further comment on the matter and that the investigation is being conducted by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

The teenagers’ deaths have been decried by members of their Florida community and others across the country, calling for police accountability. Families and lawyers for the teens – one of whom is prominent civil rights lawyer Benjamin Crump – say the footage shows that by avoiding Santiago-Miranda, the teens were trying not to hit him.

“The video posted by @BrevardSheriff makes it clear that AJ Crooms and Sincere Pierce were terrified, trying to get around the cops who approached with guns,” Crump said on a Nov. 18. Tweeter. “Out of danger, the deputy moved closer for a better shot, firing with intent to kill, then continued firing as the car passed.”

Crump did not immediately respond to an NBC News request for comment on Monday. In one Tweeter Yesterday he said the shooting was a “robbery” of the teenagers’ young lives and called on others to demand justice for their deaths.

Ivey said in the Facebook post that the case is still “active and ongoing” and the investigation will be completed within “60-90 days.”

As for Saturday’s shooting, the results of the investigation will be presented to the state attorney’s office, Goodyear said, but did not specify when.
