Motorola and Verizon have begun taking pre-orders for the Moto 5G Mod, the add-on smartphone accessory Moto z3 introduced last year. The device supports 5G mmWave radio connectivity, less than 6 GHz. The 5G Moto Mod only works with the Moto z3, and will be available exclusively to Verizon customers in the United States.
Motorola's Motorola 5G Moto Mod contains Qualcomm's Snapdragon 855 SoC, which is used to boot the company's X50 modem, the key tool of the developer's 5G platform. In addition to chips, the 5G Moto Mod also includes 10 antennas: four QTM052 from Qualcomm for the mmWave radio, two antennas for connectivity below 6 GHz and four for 4G / LTE. Verizon will sell Motorola Moto Mod 5G for $ 349.99 at a retail price if purchased with a Moto z3, or for customers who already have an active Moto z3 account. Meanwhile, customers who have purchased a z3 Moto Package and any Verizon Unlimited Plan can get the product for $ 50 if they sign up for 5G service for $ 10 per month (with the first three free months) in addition to their current package, which now costs $ 105 for 24 months. Verizon will launch its 5G Ultra Wideband service in parts of Chicago and Minneapolis on April 11th. Later this year, the company will expand its 5G Ultra Wideband network to more than 30 markets. In addition to Motorola's smartphone + mod 5G combination, Verizon will also be offering LG's Samsung Galaxy S10 5G and V50 ThinQ handsets later this summer.
