A "very aggressive" bull attacked his owner and was accused by police after leaving his compound, police said.

Officers received several calls about a cow approaching cars on Houses Corner Road in Sparta, New Jersey around 3 pm Friday, Sparta Township police announced Monday.

One of the calls came from the owner of the animal, who had told police that the cow was actually a bull and that the animal had recently acted "extremely aggressive".

When Sparta policewoman Arlene Lippencott visited Houses Corner Road, the owner of the bull was already on the scene in his own car, the police said.

The bull began by following his owner's car on a gravel road to the farm, but soon began banging against the car and attempting to drive it up, police said.

When the owner arrived at the farm, she got out of her car and tried to get the bull through a door and back into his pen. The bull then began to attack and throw it, police said.

"[The owner] screamed that the bull was going to kill her and that she had to shoot him, "said the police.

Agent Lippencott tried to distract the bull and managed to get the woman into her police car. Several other officers and EMS then arrived at the farm, according to the police.

Two other officers shot the bull after charging them on their police car, the department said.

The owner of the bull was taken to the hospital, where she had stitches in her head and treatment for lacerations and bruises to the upper body, the police said.
