Mozilla takes measures to protect users in Kazakhstan

Today, Mozilla and Google have taken steps to protect the online security and privacy of people in Kazakhstan. Together, the companies deployed technical solutions in Firefox and Chrome to prevent the Kazakh government from intercepting Internet traffic in the country.

The answer comes after credible information that ISPs in Kazakhstan have asked their residents to download and install a government-issued certificate on all devices and in all browsers in order to access Internet. This certificate is not approved by any of the companies and, once installed, allows the government to decrypt and read anything the user writes or publishes, including intercepting account information and passwords. This was aimed at people visiting popular sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Google, among others.

"People around the world trust Firefox to protect them when they surf the Internet, especially when it comes to protecting them from such attacks that compromise their security." We do not take this kind of action lightly, but the reason Firefox exists is the protection of our users and the integrity of the Web. "- Marshall Erwin, Senior Director of Trust and Security, Mozilla

"We will never tolerate any attempt by an organization, whether governmental or otherwise, to compromise the data of Chrome users. We have put in place safeguards against this specific problem and will always take steps to secure our users around the world. "- Parisa Tabriz, Senior Director of Engineering, Chrome

This is not the first time that the government of Kazakhstan is trying to intercept everyone's internet traffic in the country. In 2015, the Government of Kazakhstan attempted to include a root certificate in the Mozilla trusted root storage program. After discovering that they had intended to use the certificate to intercept user data, Mozilla refused the request. Shortly after, the government forced citizens to manually install the certificate, but this failed after organizations filed lawsuits.

Each company will deploy a unique technical solution for its browser. For more information on these solutions, please see the links below.
