Ben Roethlisberger's season is over. According to head coach Mike Tomlin, MRI's Roethlisberger revealed Monday that a surgery would be needed. The following statement has been posted on Steelers.com.
Statement by Mike Tomlin on Ben Roethlisberger: Ben Roethlisberger had an MRI on his right elbow on Sunday night and the Steelers medical team decided that surgery would be needed. We expect surgery planned for this week. He will be placed on our reserve / injured list and will be absent for the season.
Roethlisberger, who begins his 16th season in the NFL, is now Steeler's oldest player. In 2019, Ben Roethlisberger played more seasons than the original "Iron Man" Steelers, Mike Webster. Sunday's game at Pittsburgh meant 239th in the Steelers for Roethlisberger, putting him in a tie with Webster in the games played for black and gold.
The double Super Bowl champion has been selected six times in the Pro Bowl over the course of his career and led the league passing the passing yards in 2018 with his record of 5,129 yards. In 2018, Roethlisberger also recorded career highs in passing attempts (675), completions (452) and touchdowns (34).
As for the playoffs, Roethlisberger's 13-8 is the fifth-highest winning percentage of active quarterbacks with five or more starts in the playoffs. Comparing his percentage of playoff wins to all players since the merger in 1970, Roethlisberger ranks 20th among the quarterbacks with five or more starts.
In 2019, Roethlisberger started with 35 finishes on 62 attempts for 351 yards. He did not throw a touchdown and had an interception with a 0-2 record.
With Rothlisberger missing for the season, Mason Rudolph will replace the full-time quarterback. In the second half of Sunday's game against the Seattle Seahawks, Rudolph completed 12 of his 19 passes for 112 yards. Rudolph threw two touchdowns and one interception due to a missed pass in the loss.
With Roethlisberger in IR and absent for the season, Mason Rudolph is expected to be the starting quarterback of the Steelers.
