MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan asserted that there is a double standard in US politics that holds Democrats accountable but Republicans not, in his monologue following the resignation of Democratic New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.
“The Democratic Party is always ready to take action against suspected offenders within it, unlike the other major political party in this country,” Hasan said Tuesday.
Cuomo announced his resignation, which will be effective in 13 days, about a week after a report from New York Attorney General Letitia James revealed that he sexually harassed 11 women from 2013 to 2020. He and his lawyers denied any wrongdoing even as one of his accusers. , Brittany Commisso, recounted in detail how he would have groped, hugged and kissed her without her consent.
NY GOVERNMENT. CUOMO Resigns AMID SEXUAL HARASSMENT SCANDAL
Hasan pointed to GOP figures such as former Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens, Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh and former President Trump, whom he called “suspected aggressors, ”as proof that Republicans are quick to point fingers at Democrats but are not interested in holding their own leaders to account.
“So yes, today is a sad day for the Democratic Party,” Hasan said. “One of their stars, a man they considered a presidential candidate just over a year ago, resigned in disgrace.”
“But you could say it’s a sadder day for American democracy because it’s a reminder that there are only consequences, there is only the responsibility of Democrats in our system,” he continued. “Not for Republicans.”
Hasan’s monologue seemed to miss a few examples, including the account of Tara Reade, a former Senate member who claimed last year that Joe biden sexually assaulted her in 1993. She said the media avoided telling her story.
“Joe Biden got away with harassing and sexually assaulting me in 1993 and other women filed similar complaints as well,” Reade said. “Joe Biden has ascended to the presidency anyway.”
MEDIA RIPPED FOR THE COVER TIMELINE OF MORE CUOMO SCANDALS: “THIS IS POLITICALLY USEFUL NOW”
This week, she said she hoped Cuomo’s resignation would lead to a full investigation into her accusations against the Democratic president.
“My heart goes out to the brave survivors of Cuomo who tried to discredit them like I did Joe Biden with the help of nonprofits supposed to help women like Time’s Up,” Reade told Fox News . “May there be some justice for the survivors. Now let’s call for a real investigation of Joe Biden and expose the corruption protecting powerful predators.”
In addition to cases of Democrats appearing to be unaccountable, there are examples of Republicans who have suffered consequences for their disturbing behavior.
Former Rep. Trent Franks, R-Arizona, was reprimanded by party leadership and ultimately resigned in 2017 over allegations he offered a staff member $ 5 million to replace his wife. He resigned the same week as Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., Rep. John Conyers Jr., D-Mich., Both also charged with sexual harassment. Former Rep. Blake Farenthold, a Republican from Texas, would also fall into the same category, having resigned in 2018 following multiple allegations of sexual harassment and misconduct.
Former Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens, who Hasan mentioned as one of the Republicans who committed wrongdoing because he is now running for the Senate, was embroiled in a scandal in 2018 involving an affair with his former barber. . He resigned after lawmakers, including many Republicans, urged him to resign.
