NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – The Metropolitan Transportation Authority came to a screeching halt overnight as floodwaters poured in.
First responders had to rescue bus and train passengers.

At 12:30 a.m. Thursday, CBS2 learned that there had been six evacuations in subways stuck between stations.

Passengers at the 28th Street station couldn’t believe their eyes as an avalanche of water poured in.
On Staten Island, an MTA bus had to pull over after being submerged in waist-deep water. Firefighters led the passengers and the driver to higher ground in a nearby building.

The driver of another bus managed to navigate the flooded roads and get to safety. The passengers stood in their seats as the water covered the ground.

In an overnight statement, acting MTA chairman Janno Lieber said in part: “New Yorkers should not attempt to travel until further notice. We will deploy maximum pumping capacity and inject workers into the system when it is safe, so that as this epic storm eases, service can be restored as soon as possible. “
Metro and bus service remains limited, but for those who need to travel, the MTA suggests taking the bus.
