Alex Murdaugh was out of breath and burst into tears on several occasions when he told police his wife and son had been shot, according to a haunting recording of his 911 call to cops released Thursday.

The leading South Carolina lawyer told the dispatcher he was away and returned home to find the two bodies bloodied.

“I’m up to it now, it’s bad,” Murdaugh was heard to say to Colleton County dispatcher Angel Fraser on the June 7 call.

“OK, and are they breathing? “

“No, ma’am,” Murdaugh told Fraser.

“And you said it was your wife and your son?” asks the dispatcher.

“My wife and my son,” he said.

“Are they in a vehicle? “

“No ma’am,” Murdaugh replies. “They are on the floor in my kennel.”

The recordings were released under a Freedom of Information Act request filed by fitnews.com with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

No suspect has been officially named in the deaths of Maggie Murdaugh, 52, and the couple’s 22-year-old son Paul at their Colleton County property.

The two have been shot several times, authorities said.

Alex Murdaugh is a prominent lawyer and descendant of one of South Carolina’s most influential legal dynasties – his firm, Peters, Murdaugh, Parker, Eltzroth & Derrick, was founded by his great-grandfather in 1910.

But the family was also facing controversy at the time of the shooting. Paul Murdaugh was facing charges in the boat death of teenager Mallory Beach in 2019.

He was identified early on as a person of interest in the murders, but authorities admitted he also had a strong alibi, Fitsnews reported.

During the 6.5-minute 911 call, Murdaugh told Fraser that he was away and found the bodies on his return home, urging the dispatcher to “hurry” several times.

“I don’t want you to touch them at all, okay?” Fraser told him. “I don’t know if you’ve touched them yet, but I don’t want you to touch them just in case they can get some evidence, okay?” “

“I’ve touched them before trying to get, trying to see if they were breathing,” he replies.

Fraser then tells Murdaugh to turn on his vehicle’s hazard lights so the cops can find the scene more easily, which he says he did.

He hung up after saying, “Ma’am, I need to call some members of my family. “
