Museum Exhibition – Custom Cars by Metallica Frontman James Hetfield – Rolling Stone

When Metallica announced its inaugural Orion festival in 2012, each member highlighted an aspect of his personality with an installation. Leader James Hetfield chose hot-rolled restoration and break-in cars. It is not surprising that he has accumulated an impressive collection of vintage cars over the years. Now he shows part of it at an exhibition at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles.

The singer-guitarist donated 10 custom cars to the museum, including a 1948 "Jaguar Black Pearl" and a 1934 Lincoln Zephyr "Voodoo Priest." Petersen will exhibit them alongside Metallica's "objects and memorabilia."

Hetfield built the "Black Pearl" out of nothing with custom car manufacturer Rick Dore. According to PPG Finish, he won the 2014 Mother's Day Custom Award at the 32nd All-American Meeting of the Goodguys Rod & Custom Association. It is equipped with a Ford V8 engine of 375 horsepower, a Mustang suspension and the braking system of a Ford Explorer, according to AutoEvolution. The "voodoo priest" was a finalist of the same show.

Hetfield is currently touring with Metallica to close the European dates of the band's WorldWired tour this month. They will return to the United States in September for two "S & M2" concerts, where they will perform with the San Francisco Symphony. After that, they are scheduled to race in Australasia and a handful of South American dates next year.

Fans who can not attend the S & M2 concerts will be able to watch the concerts on the big screen, since a film of these shows will be broadcast in 3,000 theaters around the world in October.
