[MWC 2019] Hands on the Xiaomi Mi 9 translucent

[ad_1]

Last week, Xiaomi launched the flagship product Xiaomi Mi 9 in China. Along with the standard edition, the company announced the Transparent Edition, which, just like the Mi 8 Explorer Edition, allows you to see the innards of the phone through the rear window. Aside from the look, the only difference between the two devices is that the transparency has 12 GB of RAM.

Xiaomi is exhibiting the Mi 9 at MWC 2019 in Barcelona, and we need to look at it. I am a big supporter of the idea of having a translucent back and seeing the components of a device. It's just cool to have an idea of what it looks like inside.

One of the other notable features is the 48 MPa camera, which we see more and more often in the phones of Chinese manufacturers, such as the Honor View 20 or the Redmi Note 7 Pro. In this model, this camera is highlighted by a red ring around the lens and sits on top of the secondary sensors, which are a 12MP optical zoom camera and a 16MP ultra wide angle shooter.

Game phones are becoming more and more common and popular mobile titles such as Fortnite and Battlefields of PlayerUnkown, Xiaomi also included a Game Booster feature, supposed to improve the performance of compatible games. The Game Booster app offers a selection of pretty popular titles, including the two mentioned above. I've tried it with Asphalt 9: Legends and I could not say a lot of difference, though.

Another novelty is the artificial intelligence button which, unlike Samsung's implementation, calls the Google assistant, which you may want to sometimes use. Although you can not turn it off completely, it offers some customization and you can choose from a set of tasks that you can perform by pressing the button twice or holding it down. These include turning on the flashlight or jumping into the front or rear camera.

This is not all about shortcuts. There is another feature called Smart Ball, which rests on the side of your screen. You can drag it to the side and press to get a list of five shortcuts of your choice. These can be associated with specific system settings and actions, or you can set shortcuts to open the application of your choice.

If the large 6.39-inch screen makes it difficult to access the corners of the screen, there is also a one-handed mode that you activate by side-scanning from the home button. This is not quite new in phones, but I think it was pretty cool to be able to set the screen size of your choice for one-hand mode, from 3.5 to 4.5 inches.

The Xiaomi Mi 9 is currently only available in China, from 2999 yuan (about 446 dollars) to the standard model with 6GB of RAM, but the special edition above will cost you 3999 yuan (about 595 dollars) . Other features include the Snapdragon 855 chipset (without 5G modem), 128GB of storage and a 3500mAh battery that can charge quickly.
