Mobile World Congress, or MWC as it is called, is the real starting point of the smartphone season of the year. Unlike more general fairs like CES and IFA, the MWC is primarily focused (as you might guess) on mobile technology – and with its exact timing at the end of February, it's perfectly located to serve as a starting point for phones for the second quarter and through the summer.
Although there are some distractions in smart home technologies and games, MWC is making Barcelona a playground for smartphone fans for a week. The show officially begins on February 25th, but announcements begin on February 23rd. Here are all the most important announcements you can expect at MWC 2019.
Smartphones – both flat and foldable
MWC marks the point where flood gates open every year for smartphones. While the CES in early January is generally free of ads on smartphones, the MWC is filled, from companies of all sizes. Let's go through the list of expected ads, in chronological order:
Samsung Galaxy S10, S10 + and S10e (February 20 at 1 pm ET)
The launch of the Samsung Galaxy S10 is obviously before MWC, but hardly. And everything that happens at the CMM will surely be seen from the perspective of what Samsung is doing the day before everyone heads to Spain. We know just about everything we can expect, including a standard Galaxy S10, a larger Galaxy S10 + and a simpler (and cheaper) Galaxy S10e. Expect more details on the launch in the days that follow, while everyone will have their eyes and hands on the phones at the MWC.
Xiaomi Mi 9 and foldable phone (February 24 at 4:30 am ET)
Xiaomi has already told us that the Mi 9 will be launched at the MWC. So we can expect to see his crazy high-resolution megapixel camera and his gorgeous glass on February 24th. Xiaomi could also choose to show its foldable phone concept in person, after installing a tantalizing video of the hardware a few weeks ago.
Nokia 9 PureView (February 24 at 10 pm ET)
The next Nokia 9 could mark the return of the brand "PureView", and if this crazy configuration supposed to five cameras is official, you can mark me as excited. Nokia phones have steadily increased in terms of quality and price with each generation, and the success of this show will be even greater than that of the Nokia 8 Sirocco of last year.
LG G8 (February 24 at 1:30 pm ET)
LG pre-announced a considerable amount of the LG G8, so we most know what will happen. It looks a lot like a successor to the G7 and V40, with a touchless gesture control system and ordered hardware upgrades.
Sony Xperia XZ4 (February 25 at 2:30 am ET)
The latest Sony flagship product should be a particularly big phone, with a 21/9 screen of 6.5 inches, but without notch. or a perforation on the screen. Chances are it's the first Sony phone with three cameras on the back as well. Sony has lightened the idea of a "compact" version, but we could witness the launch of a kind of model associated with a slightly lower price.
Phones and networks 5G
In fact, we've heard a lot about 5G at last years MWC, but operators are currently starting 5G networks and companies are manufacturing 5G phones. The MWC 2019 will be the largest show ever organized for 5G.
Samsung Galaxy S10 5G
With the standard Galaxy S10, the larger S10 + and the cheaper S10e, Samsung is expected to announce a completely separate Galaxy S10 5G. The 5G model will probably not be a 5G version of the Galaxy S10 +, but a completely different phone. It will probably be larger than the Galaxy S10 +, leaving more room for a bigger battery, 5G radios and additional antennas.
LG V50 5G
LG is expected to announce a 5G ad and will probably be called LG V50. Like the upgraded versions of the V30 manufactured by LG after its launch, including the V30S and V35, the V50 should be primarily based on the LG V40 with some strategic changes, namely a 5G radio. Because the LG V50 should be a 5G phone, it Probably will not be a 5G version of the LG G8.
OnePlus 5G phone
OnePlus has already let the cat out of its bag, pre-announcing that it would have a 5G phone in partnership with EE in the UK. But MWC would be the perfect time to give us some details. We know that the OnePlus 6T will cost considerably more (about $ 300 more), but we do not know what it will bring beyond the network.
Huawei foldable 5G phone
Since Huawei will unveil the P30 at a dedicated event, that leaves MWC to talk about 5G and foldable. Huawei has already said that he was going to show some kind of foldable phone and have 5G connectivity. This is a big step forward on a new territory where other companies operate one or the other (or neither); but given the size and power of Huawei in both components and Network is a great way to show all your abilities at once.
Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G
Along with its other announcements, Xiaomi is expected to roll out an improved version of its recently released Mi Mix 3 with 5G radios. We are essentially looking for a standard Mi Mix 3, but with a Snapdragon 855 processor and the supported 5G modem.
Carrier announcements
Carriers from all over the world, not just Europe, will ask MWC to make big announcements about their milestones with the deployment of 5G networks in their home country. Many of these announcements will focus on the launch of their networks by consumers in specific cities and will often be linked to partnerships with manufacturers who will launch 5G phones designed specifically for their networks. Since 5G networks are in their infancy, it will take a strong relationship between operators and phone makers to bring together all the experience.
Network provider announcements
In connection with the discussion of operators, 5G network providers will themselves have major announcements regarding the partnerships they have entered into to provide operators with 5G equipment. Companies like Ericsson, Qualcomm, Huawei, Intel, Nokia and dozens of others are struggling to provide operators with the hardware they need to launch their new 5G networks to the public. The individual ads may not be very interesting, but the implications are enormous and show the overall direction of the industry.
