‘My Goddess lover.’ Messages reveal romantic relationship between Chad and Lori Daybell before Tammy Daybell died

CHANDLER, Arizona – Text messages between Chad and Lori Daybell paint a picture of a romantic relationship long before Tammy Daybell died two years ago.

The messages were included in a large file released by the Chandler Arizona Police Department regarding the death of Charles Vallow. Charles was married to Lori Vallow before his brother, Alex Cox, shot and killed him on July 11, 2019.

“I’m going to bed so I can snuggle up to you,” Chad wrote to Lori two days later. “I adore you! You are truly my best friend on earth and for all eternity. See you in a minute!”

Chad, an author of fiction books on Latter-day Saints, began writing his own story to Lori the next day in a series of text messages, according to police documents. A detective described the writings as “some kind of romance novel” and noted that he was following the relationship between the couple but that the names had been changed to “James” and “Elena”.

The story begins with James arriving in St. George, Utah, where a voice told him he would meet a woman who would change his life forever. At one event, James was introduced to Elena by someone Chad wrote was MG.

“When their hands touched, he felt a shock go through him and his heart began to beat rapidly,” the text reads. “Elena was gorgeous and lively, and James was a little intimidated but honored that she was speaking to him.”

In a previous interview with EastIdahoNews.com, Lori’s former best friend Melanie Gibb said the couple met at a conference where Chad was talking and selling his books in St. George. According to Gibb, Chad told Lori that the two had met in a previous life and had been married multiple times in previous existences.

The story Chad continued to send to Lori took on an R-rated turn, with him detailing a sexual relationship between James and Elena. Throughout the story, James is obsessed with the clothes Elena wore and her physical features, calling her the “exalted goddess” who had come to earth to perform “a special mission”. The mission included Elena with James.

In police reports, investigators wrote that Chad and Lori would have called themselves James and Elena or Raphael and Lili in other text messages. In one of them, Chad calls Lori his “loving goddess” while Lori lists Chad on her phone as “Bubby”.

“Tonight I figured out who I was feeling,” Chad sent Lori. “I’m an adult version of Harry Potter, who has to live with the Dudleys in his small space under the stairs.” Every few weeks I get away and have some amazing adventures with my Goddess lover, but then I have to go back home under the stairs, feeling trapped. But I feel that permanent freedom is coming!

After Vallow was shot, Alex Cox and Lori claimed it was in self-defense, but Lori is charged with conspiracy to commit murder in connection with the death of her fourth husband. Cox died on December 12, 2019, in what a forensic scientist called of natural causes.

As the relationship progressed, Chad had still been married to his wife for 29 years. The couple lived in Salem, a rural community just north of Rexburg. Chandler’s detectives wrote that until August 2019, Chad and Lori appeared to be struggling to maintain their relationship as he was still married.

“You should give each other (sic) love and care for your wife and your family,” Lori wrote to Chad on Aug 11, 2019. “I’m just a distraction. Go have some family fun. I really want you to do it. I can’t be on the way anymore. If things change, we can talk. But we have nothing until things change anyway.

Despite the difficulties, Lori packed her things and moved to Rexburg from Arizona at the end of August. The text messages went on to say that they would fight the “evil spirits” attached to the people around them.

“Hello my little angel. Great news about Tammy. Please let me know if you are awake and can talk. I love you!” Chad texted Lori on October 5, 2019.

The news was that Tammy had been taken over by a “demonic entity” named Viola. Chad claimed that Tammy’s sister was responsible for her possession and that Tammy’s personality would change quickly because of this spirit attached to her.

“I’m not entirely sure when to pull out, but once his actions verify the differences, I don’t want to wait,” Chad said.

Chad called 911 on October 19, 2019, saying his wife Tammy had passed away in her sleep. She was buried in a Utah cemetery a few days later. In December 2019, his body was exhumed and an autopsy was performed. Authorities did not disclose the cause of her death, but several sources familiar with the investigation told EastIdahoNews.com that she died of asphyxiation.

Less than two weeks after his death, Chad and Lori were married in Hawaii.

Shortly before Tammy’s death, Lori’s two children, Joshua “JJ” Vallow, 7, and Tylee Ryan, 16, were missing. Their bodies were found buried in Chad’s backyard on June 9, 2020.

The couple have been charged with several felonies, including conspiracy to commit murder and first degree murder. The charges relate to the deaths of JJ, Tylee and Tammy. Lori was also charged in Arizona with conspiracy to murder in connection with the death of Charles Vallow.

No trial is scheduled for the couple and Lori is currently in the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare after a mental health professional ruled her unfit to stand trial.
