CLEVELAND, Ohio – Myles Garrett is placed on the reserve / COVID-19 list on Friday after testing positive for the virus and will miss Sunday’s game against the Eagles 3-5-1.
Depending on how things go over the next 10 days, he could be back in time for next week’s game in Jacksonville, but the Browns – 6-3 and in a tight playoff race – are gearing up to be without him for two games. .
Garrett, who leads the NFL with 9.5 sacks, was kept home from the Browns facility on Wednesday and Thursday due to flu-like symptoms and was placed on the roster today.
Because he is both positive and symptomatic, he must be away from the club for at least 10 days and receive medical clearance to return.
The good news for the Browns is that Garrett has been at home all week and no high-risk close contacts have been identified. The Browns and all NFL teams are now all on Intensive Protocol, which means all meetings are held virtually.
Garrett’s 10-day window began when he first reported symptoms to medical staff at the club, which was presumably on Wednesday. In that scenario, he could possibly return on the Saturday before the Jaguars game, but a number of other things would have to happen for him to be erased.
He should be fever-free for at least 24 hours without using a fever reducer, other symptoms should have resolved, and he should receive approval from team and league medical staff.
With Garrett out, Adrian Clayborn or Porter Gustin will start in his place against a team that has given up 35 mostly sacks in the NFL.
Garrett not only leads the NFL with 9.5 sacks and four strip sacks. He is one of the leading contenders for NFL Defensive Player of the Year and is in a close race with Aaron Donald of the Rams and TJ Watt of the Steelers, who are tied for second in the NFL at 9, 0 bags.
Probably missing two games will definitely put his candidacy in jeopardy.
But his teammates and coaches – and those of other teams – believe he deserves the award this year.
“Myles, he’s going to be an all-time great,” linebacker Sione Takitaki said Thursday. “Guys can see his play. When Sunday rolls around and he flies over there looking for bags and bandages, he has a phenomenal year. This year I feel like an MVP type defensive season.
“Even last year, seeing how dominant he is, he’s definitely a guy who comes out and destroys games. The offensive coordinators definitely need to double him, and that kind of frees up a lot of people. What I see is just a guy who works hard, goes out there on Sunday and performs. He loves his teammates. I have the impression that in defense we are a tight unit. Everyone, we get along well. Myles brings that leadership and that ability to play. ”
Eagles coach Doug Pederson believes Garrett is “ surely arguing for the NFL DPOY right now.

Right tackle Jack Conklin and kicker Cody Parkey are also on the reserve / COVID-19 list as high-risk contacts of a positive non-member, but may eventually join the squad on Saturday in time for the Des Eagles. They should stay away for days after exposure to the positive person.
Offensive tackle Chris Hubbard and fullback Andy Janovich are also in reserve / COVID-19 after testing positive for the virus, Hubbard last Friday and Janovich on Tuesday. If Hubbard and Janovich were symptomatic, they will also need to sit for at least 10 days.
