A mysterious metal monolith has been discovered in Utah after public safety officers spotted the object during a routine wildlife mission.

A helicopter crew from the Utah Department of Public Safety’s Aeronautical Office assisted wildlife resources Wednesday in counting bighorn sheep in southeast Utah, the department said.

Pilot Bret Hutchings said one of the officers spotted the object in a remote area of red rock – something that looked like a scene straight out of “2001: A Space Odyssey”.

“He was like, ‘Whoa, whoa, whoa, turn around, turn around!’ And I was like, “What.” And he’s like, ‘There’s this thing over there – we have to go look at it!’ “Hutchings told CNN affiliate KSL. “We just flew straight over this one.”

Hutchings said the origins of the silvery-metal monolith still remain a mystery, but that it appeared to be a “new wave” art installation that measured “between 10 and 12 feet tall.”

“It is illegal to install structures or works of art without permission on public lands managed by the federal government, no matter what planet you are from,” the Department of Public Safety said. Utah in a statement released Monday.

The ministry said it was not clear who or what had installed the monolith and that it would not disclose the exact location of the object for security reasons.

They added that the Bureau of Land Management will determine whether a further investigation is warranted.
