2020: a space odyssey?
A mysterious monolith, believed to be some sort of metal, was discovered in remote areas of Utah on Wednesday, fueling speculation about what the object was or how it got there, according to reports.
The structure, estimated to be between 10 feet and 12 feet tall, was discovered by state wildlife workers counting sheep from a helicopter.
The Utah Highway Patrol shared a photo of the find on Instagram, along with the caption: “Counting Bighorn Sheep with DWR This Week. During the counts we came across this, in the middle of nowhere , buried deep in the rock. Curious minds want to know, what is it? Someone? “

Bret Hutchings, the helicopter pilot, said it was “about the strangest thing I have encountered in all my years of flying,” according to KSL-TV of Salt Lake City.
Hutchings was flying for the Utah Department of Public Safety, which assisted wildlife officers in the county in the southeastern state.
“We were kind of joking that if one of us suddenly disappears, then we all rush,” he told the station.
The object drew comparisons to the famous 1968 Stanley Kubrick film “2001: A Space Odyssey”, which saw a group of monkeys encounter a similar giant slab.
“I guess he’s a new wave artist or something or, you know, someone who was a huge fan from 2001: A Space Odyssey fan,” Hutchings said.

Authorities said the mysterious object was planted in the ground in a remote area of red rock with “no clear indication” of who put it there, according to a press release from the Ministry of Public Security of the ‘Utah.
The agency added that if people decide to venture into an undisclosed and remote location, they “may find themselves stranded and in need of rescue.”

Social media users quickly speculated on the object.
“It’s the on-off button of the planet,” wrote one user.
“I love it. I imagine it’s a work of art, but if it isn’t…” another replied.

The Bureau of Land Management is in the process of determining whether to investigate further, the statement said.
