A rescue operation is underway for mountaineers stranded on the north side of Mount Rainier in the state of Washington since Monday.

Mount Rainier National Park spokesman Kevin Bacher said the park received a report on Monday afternoon that mountaineers needed help because the wind had removed or destroyed their tent and their climbing equipment.

Bacher says mountaineers include Yevgeniy Krasnitskiy of Portland, Oregon; Vasily Aushev and Kostya "Constantine" Toporov of New York; and Ruslan Khasbulatov of Jersey City, New Jersey.

A helicopter from the park found them on Monday on the Liberty Ridge road, but strong winds thwarted rescue attempts. On Tuesday, the US military sent a Chinook helicopter and crew, but they have not been able to rescue so far.

Officials say the Liberty Ridge Road is one of the most dangerous roads on Mount Rainier.
