Nabsico’s 63-year-old factory at Fair Lawn will be packing its last boxes of sweet treats on Friday.
Parent company Mondelez International has confirmed that Friday is the plant’s last day of production, with the majority of the 600 employees having already moved, whether they are retiring, taking jobs at other companies, or relocating within the company.
Spokeswoman Laurie Guzzinati said Thursday she did not have a breakdown of where employees ended up or how many were left out of work as a result of the shutdown.
The factory, a landmark in the borough since 1958, produces baked goods under the Nabisco brand, including such staples as Oreo, Lorna Doone, and Teddy Grahams, whose sweet aroma is a familiar scent for the residents.
Mondelez International announced the closure of the Fair Lawn and Atlanta factories in February. At the time, Mondelez said the Fair Lawn facility would close by the end of the summer. Since then, cooking and production operations have gradually slowed down.
The Atlanta site closed in June, Guzzinati said.
Their other location on the east coast – in Richmond, Virginia – will remain open.
“Fair Lawn and Atlanta are no longer strategic assets from a geographic footprint perspective and both face significant operational challenges, including aging infrastructure and obsolete production capabilities, which would have required significant investments for companies. bring it to the modernized state required for the future, ”the company said in a statement in February.
Meanwhile, Mondelez International is sifting through the offers that have been submitted to purchase the property. This process began in the spring.
“We are working on the next steps to choose a buyer,” Guzzinati said.
Across New Jersey, the company employs an additional 1,500 people. The activities of the North America and United States region are headquartered in East Hanover,
Local and state officials sharply criticized the decision to shut down, with Fair Lawn Mayor Kurt Peluso saying: “I think the way they handled this was extremely inappropriate and just absolutely disgusting.”
