Nabisco workers end week-long strike after signing new contract

Although the union’s previous contract expired months ago, the stalemate began in earnest in August, when workers at a Nabisco bakery in Portland, Ore., Went on strike. Workers in Colorado, Virginia, Illinois and Georgia followed suit, with more than 1,000 Nabisco workers taking part in the strike, the union said. The strike affected three bakeries and three small retail distribution facilities, according to Chicago-based Mondelez.

As the strike continued, tensions mounted over the contract dispute – and as Mondelez disclosed its profits. For the three months ending in June, the company recorded a 12% gain in revenue from the previous year.

Picket line strikers in Portland last week blocked several vehicles attempting to leave a Nabisco factory, sparking an argument with security guards, KATU television reported.

During contract negotiations, the union urged Mondelez to restore a pension plan for Nabisco employees, which it replaced with a 401 (k) program in 2018.

One point of contention between the union and the company concerned overtime: Mondelez wanted some Nabisco employees to work up to 12 hours without being entitled to overtime payment, in exchange for fewer days per week. Those who work weekends, previously eligible for extra pay, would only get the bonus after working 40 hours per week. Those weekend shifts will be filled primarily with new hires under the agreement, according to photos of the contract posted online.
